Welcome to Belgoprocess

Radioactivity plays an important role in medical and in industrial and scientific applications. What is more, the major part of the electricity production in Belgium is still derived from nuclear technology. All these activities result in a residual amount of waste that requires special care. When Belgium opted for a centralised approach to process its radioactive waste, Belgoprocess was entrusted with this responsibility.

Belgoprocess has an extensive knowledge and experience, as well as multifunctional infrastructure to treat, condition and store radioactive waste and decommission obsolete nuclear installations safety and responsibly. Belgoprocess continuously strives towards optimizing existing technologies and developing new ones. More recently, Belgoprocess offers this know-how also to international clients on a commercial basis.

Belgoprocess can therefore justifiably be called an international, high-tech environmental company in the heart of the Kempen region.

In the spotlight

Belgoprocess enters into Romanian contract

In June 2017, Belgoprocess entered into a contract for the incineration of 72 tons of low-level radioactive waste originating from the Cernavoda nuclear power plant in Romania and supplied to Belgoprocess via MATE-FIN S.R.L.

Since 2008, MATE-FIN has a contract with SN Nuclearelectrica SA for the provision of services to SN Nuclearelectrica’s Cernavoda nuclear power plant, units 1 and 2. That contract includes the processing of radioactive waste coming from these two units.

Within the framework of this contract, MATE-FIN, NIRAS and Belgoprocess have signed a contract to incinerate 72 tons of low-level radioactive waste in the CILVA incineration plant at the Belgoprocess site in Dessel. Belgoprocess will carry out a first campaign of 30 tons in 2017. The remaining waste will be processed in a second campaign of 42 tons in the period 2018-2020.

After processing in the CILVA installation, the processed waste will be returned to SN Nuclearelectrica’s Cernavoda site, the owner of the waste.

This contract creates an added value for Belgoprocess in terms of employment, cost of the waste management system in Belgium and the retention and expansion of know-how.
