Treatment and conditioning of all types of radioactive waste

Belgoprocess treats radioactive waste originating from nuclear power plants, hospitals, laboratories and industry. The objective for waste treatment and conditioning is the transformation of radioactive waste into a stable end product, ready for intermediate storage and/or final disposal. Doing so, it is important to minimise the volume and immobilise the radioactivity of the waste.

In order to choose the adequate treatment, the waste is classified in several categories, all related to a specific treatment and conditioning process. For each category, Belgoprocess has the appropriate installations and technologies.

Once the waste has been classified, its volume is reduced as much as possible. Liquid waste is collected in tanks and reduced to a small volume of sludge through chemical or thermal treatment. Solid burnable waste is incinerated at a temperature of 900°C. Solid non-burnable waste is collected in steel drums and compacted to pellets of approximately 25 cm height. Waste that is neither burnable nor compactable is cut and collected in standard drums.

Residues from the treatment of the various radioactive waste categories are encapsulated in glass, bitumen or cement. The waste is subsequently packed in steel drums that each have a specific identification number, such that the content and origin of the waste in each drum can be tracked. As soon as the radioactive waste is treated and encapsulated in a drum, it is referred to as “conditioned waste”.
