Isotopolis

A unique information centre

Isotopolis is an information centre for students aged 15 through 18 and for everyone else who is interested. In an interactive way, visitors can learn about radioactivity and about what happens to radioactive waste in Belgium.

Structured around three themes

The first theme of the visitors’ centre is radioactivity and radiation. These are explained in a visually attractive way by means of practical demonstrations and experiments in a mini laboratory. A unique feature in Belgium is the cloud chamber, an enclosed viewing box in which invisible ionising radiation is made visible.

The second theme deals with the short-term management of radioactive waste. You find out where radioactive waste comes from, what it looks like and what currently happens to it. Authentic materials and surprising visuals give you a realistic idea of how radioactive waste is managed on a day-to-day basis.

The third theme looks at the future and the long-term solutions for radioactive waste. The various disposal options that scientists are currently studying and testing are presented in detail with the help of photos and scale models.

Practical information

Isotopolis can be visited throughout the school year from Monday through Friday. The visit is free, but reservations are required. A visit lasts about two hours.

Isotopolis offers a free information package to prepare students for the visit.
